Caribbean Linked VI, Atelier 89'.
August 14 - December 02, 2022.
Oranjestad, Aruba.
During the summer of 2022, Jackson was invited to participate in Caribbean Linked VI at Atelier 89 in Aruba. The artist created two works, one installation and one assemblage (which he refers to as "pintura híbrida). Both pieces incorporate numerous found elements from the artist's time in Aruba, with a focus on up-cycling and the memories formed with others. Through these works, Jackson explores the connections between art, memory, and place, and invites viewers to consider the ways in which our surroundings shape our experiences and memories. Below linked is an essay detailing this experience on the Caribbean Linked website.
The work, “balashi boi”, invited viewers to engage directly with the sculptural installation. Participants could drink the beers, light the candles, or write a note if they wished. Conceptualized as an ofrenda, the piece served as a testament to the shared experiences during CLVI. Each item in the installation was carefully chosen by other members of the program, transforming the work into a collective act of memorialization and a poignant reflection on the time spent together.

The assemblage was created with a focus on utilizing materials readily available in the artist's environment. The process began with sketches inspired by images captured during a stay in Aruba. From these sketches, the artist produced eight small paintings on imitation suede, a fabric new to their practice. Once the compositions were structurally developed, they were introduced to the local environment, including the beach, Alto Vista, and the sand dunes. The transformation process included an unexpected act of collaboration when Atelier 89’ director, Elvis Lopez, assisted by running the works over with the Ateliers van, adding a unique layer of patina and narrative to the pieces. As the paintings evolved, developing their own stories and textures, they were carefully assembled, nail by nail, into the final work, with the artist reflecting on their relationships to one another throughout the process.
Thank you to Annalee Davis, Elvis Lopez, Holly Bynoe, Katherine Kennedy, Lupita and Chrislene for the opportunity and experience of Aruba, Atelier 89’, Caribbean Linked.
